This week, as the world’s top golfers compete on the iconic links of Royal Portrush during The Open 2025, a different kind of legend has emerged - not on the fairways, but in the sand.

At sunrise, near the 6th hole on the rugged Northern Irish coastline, a breathtaking figure appeared, carved into the shoreline: a giant, sweeping sand mural of Finn McCool, the mythical Irish hero said to have forged the Giant’s Causeway. The artwork, visible from both the air and the course, draws a powerful connection between Ireland’s ancient stories and its modern-day landscape.

Honouring a Legend in the Landscape

The piece was created by renowned sand artist Manuel Frolich in partnership with Reflo, as the Official Licensee of The Open. Inspired by the tale of Finn McCool - a warrior who shaped the land with his bare hands—the art honours one of Ireland’s oldest myths.

Crafted using entirely sustainable techniques, the installation was designed to be temporary and respectful of nature. As the tides rise, the artwork will gradually fade, leaving behind only memory - just like the stories that inspired it.

A Modern Take on Myth

According to Irish folklore, Finn McCool built a stone path across the sea to challenge a rival giant in Scotland. Today, his spirit returns to Northern Ireland’s north coast not to fight, but to remind us of the enduring power of legacy, nature, and storytelling.

This symbolic return forms part of Reflo’s “Where Giants Play” campaign, a wider creative collaboration with The Open that reimagines ancient myth for a modern audience. By combining storytelling, environmental art, and performancewear, the campaign celebrates the giants of the past and present - from folklore to fairways.
